I was born in San Diego to Jose and Maria Alvarez and have four brothers and one sister. My father worked on farms, in hotels, and later as a janitor. My mother was a homemaker and later worked in fast food restaurants. Growing up in Barrio Logan, I attended local public schools: Perkins Elementary, Memorial Junior High, and San Diego High School. I was the first Alvarez to attend college and I graduated with honors from San Diego State University.
Work

I have worked in our community, first with non-profits, and now in government, for over 14 years. I started at Family Health Centers of San Diego as a Peer Health Educator, working to prevent teenage pregnancies and HIV/AIDS. I spent five years as an after-school teacher for elementary school students. As Program Director of the Male Involvement Program, I helped fathers become closer with their children.

I was selected to the prestigious Capitol Fellows Program and served in the Executive Branch of California government under the Secretary of State. While in Sacramento, I handled policy projects and legislative proposals to protect and promote the most fundamental right in our democracy-our vote. After completing my Fellowship in Sacramento, I returned to San Diego to work with a company that develops new opportunities for affordable housing. Over the last five and a half years, I represented Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny as a liaison with the communities of District 8. In November 2010, I was elected to represent District 8 on the San Diego City Council.
Community

Community involvement is very important to me. I currently volunteer with the following organizations: San Diego Community College Trustee Advisory Committee, San Diego Cesar Chavez Commemoration Committee, San Diego Democratic Party Central Committee, Barrio Logan College Institute, Chicano/Latino Youth Leadership Project, and Christ the King Church. In the past I have volunteered with the San Diego Organizing Project, San Diego Consensus Organizing Institute, Fiesta del Sol, the Sherman Heights Community Center, and the San Diego Media Arts Center, among other organizations.

Over the last two years, I have co-chaired Barrios Unidos Hoy Organizados (BUHO). BUHO works to improve neighborhood quality of life by engaging residents and empowering them to take action. I have also helped start and foster Neighborhood Councils, and recently secured funding for a Community Leadership Academy which trains residents with knowledge of how government works and how to organize for change. I have spent the last few years in youth ministry and as a Catechist in partnership with my wife.
Family

My wife Xochitl and I had our first daughter, Izel. Xochitl and I met at Memorial Junior High over 17 years ago. She is a middle school language arts teacher and also provides after-school support to previous graduates from her school. We are proud homeowners in the community where we both grew up.
